A report from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) predicts more than 150,000 UK construction jobs will be created in the next five years.
Released in light of data indicating a stagnant building industry in January and the recent house building slump, the report forecasts 1.3% annual growth for construction output. The 158,000 jobs anticipated by the CITB includes 15,350 carpenters and 9,350 labourers needed as more homes are built, with the strongest job growth expected to be for a range of professional and managerial roles to support a boost in productivity.
The CITB foresees infrastructure continuing as the strongest sector with 3.1% annual growth and an anticipated increase in housing output.
Steve Radley, CITB Policy Director discusses the predicted boom in more detail: “The range of job opportunities is growing. While we need to bring in lots of people in the trades, the fastest growth will be for professionals at 7.8% and for managers and supervisors at 5.6%.”
He continues: “By 2022, employment will be in touching distance of the heady 2008 peak so we face a massive recruitment and training challenge, which is likely to get harder after Brexit. So while we can take some comfort from weathering the recent storms, it’s vital that we make the investment in skills today that will shape our own destiny for tomorrow.”
A fourth consecutive year of growth for employment is predicted at 0.5% on average annually until 2022, resulting in 2.77 million people in construction.
