Here we look at the reasons three more contractors are switching to modern job costing software to streamline their processes and remove the need for manual, hard to manage spreadsheets. Read below and consider if any of these challenges could be holding back the success of your business.

Cumberland Group

Cumberland Group is a family ran business specialising in retail and interior refurbishments, located in Romford. The business has built a reputation for delivering successful and high-quality projects since its inception 40 years ago and its client list consists of; Trinity Mirror Group, Marco Pierre White, Nando’s, Harvey Nichols, West Ham United, MAC Cosmetics, Jo Malone and Harrods to name a few.

Cumberland were long term users of Integrity Software, having initially implemented its Evolution system back in 1996, however after 20 years the business opted to review its job costing processes and look at alternative solutions. The business had a desire to move to a modern job costing solution alongside moving its accounts processes to a known and trusted accounting software provider. Other challenges the business faced stemmed from not being able to report on projects accurately and quickly. Opting to implement Sage 50 Accounts, Cumberland Group called in Eque2 to demonstrate its Construct for Sage 50 solution. After reviewing the demo provided, the business was satisfied that Construct fits in completely with its requirements. Making the decision to implement both Sage Accounts and Construct, the business is now confident in the accuracy of its reports. Cumberland are also now able to track actuals vs budgeted costs, and better manage plant hire and CIS, which is all currently processed manually in spreadsheets.

Shines Environmental

Shines Environmental (Shines) provide landscaping and fencing services and are located in Warwickshire. The business provides both domestic and commercial services for clients including; Persimmon, Redrow, Bellway and Taylor Wimpey.

Prior to selecting Construct for Sage 50, Shines were using Sage 50 Accounts alongside manual spreadsheets to manage their entire job costing processes. The business also had a bespoke programme however found this unsuitable to their needs. With the business being frustrated with the time it was taking to manage their job costing manually, and with a key member of the team retiring, the business went in search of a more formalised job costing process. The business was happy with their current accounting solution and wished to remain users of Sage Accounts, so explored options for job costing software that fully integrated with Sage.

The team called in Eque2 to demonstrate their Construct for Sage solution. After being satisfied with the non-obligatory on-site demonstration, the business was confident that Construct would enable them to increase productivity and save time as there is now no need to enter data more than once, they can maintain a centralised record of all jobs and bill clients from within one fully integrated solution. All within the familiar and user-friendly environment of Sage.

Like many contractors, Shines were also having issues communicating with site staff and capturing proof of completed work. Shines therefore also opted to implement ServiceStream for Sage 50, which will enable them to send jobs to operatives and attach proof of work to each project.

Oakenwoods Group

Oakenwoods Group is a start-up Carpentry & Joinery contractor located in Kent. The business is focused on providing excellence in quality and value for money and offer services such as; planning, design, manufacturing, supply and the implementation of Carpentry, Joinery and Fit-out projects. The business was established in February 2018 as a start-up carpentry & joinery business.

The directors for the new business had all previously held senior positions within market leading building development and construction companies, and as such had used many systems between them in the past. The focus for the new business was to implement software before hiring any further staff as they wanted the business processes defined and to limit the disruption caused by implementing a new job costing solution once projects are under-way. This approach also ensures staff do not revert back to the previous methods they would have used. The business operates within the same niche as other Eque2 customers and after seeing our video case study with SJE Carpentry & Joinery, Oakenwoods opted to implement Construct alongside EValuate estimating software to manage the business’s full job costing processes from initial estimate through to final accounts in one fully integrated solution.
