Here we look at why start-up contractors are turning to modern technology to support decision-making and establish best practices processes for managing their projects before inefficiencies develop, and challenges arise, which could hinder their growth.

Copper Projects is a customer-focused Design & Build consultancy, which specialises in the design and delivery of inspiring workspaces. Copper Projects was born 12 months ago to offer fit-out services to tenants, landlords & property developers in both the private and commercial sector.

As a start-up business with the aim of growing quickly, the business initially used Xero for its accounting needs and manual spreadsheets for its contract costing processes.

After operating for 12 months, the business predicted it would eventually struggle with issues such as reporting on projects in real-time, managing subcontractors and billing clients accurately.

Coupled with the business’s aim to grow rapidly, Copper Projects decided to review both its accounting and construction-specific processes, to limit any inefficiencies which may challenge the business as it continues to grow.

In January 2019, Eque2’s Construct solution was selected alongside Sage 50 Accounts, after Copper Projects had invited CLiP IT, RedSky and EasyBuild to each demo their respective solutions.

The business quickly recognised how Construct for Sage 50 would help support business activities through periods of growth, and by predicting future challenges, the business can now be confident that its internal processes are in line with the same best practices that hundreds of construction businesses have adopted, and benefit from since choosing Eque2.

Copper Projects will now begin to manage its subcontractors within Construct, allowing the business to accurately report on its supply chain including subcontractor payments vs. invoices.

In addition to this, Construct will also help to manage subcontractor insurances & CSCS cards while calculating CIS automatically, removing the need to navigate to the HMRC website to manually manage and verify subcontractors.

Going forward, Copper Projects will also use Construct to manage its entire client billing process from billing to applications and retentions management. Providing the business with greater project visibility over each project’s estimated income and expenditure, while ensuring the business bills accurately for each variation requested.

Eque2 look forward to working with and supporting Copper Projects on this exciting journey.
