The construction industry saw a substantial increase in plant sales in the second quarter of 2018, reports the Construction Index.

According to industry tradition, UK construction equipment sales tend to peak in the second quarter of the year and decline in the fourth. The positive news is that the number of construction and earthmoving machinery sold in the UK rose by 3.8% in 2018, compared with the same period in 2017.

For the first 6 months of 2018, 5% more machines were sold than in the first half of 2017, totalling over 16,000 units. The total unit sales for the whole of 2017 was roughly 30,000 units.

Crawler excavators (over 10-tonne class) in particular were found to be selling well, showing the strongest growth in Q2 at 11%. Telehandlers and mini/midi excavators (below 10 tonnes) also showed growth – at 10% and 3% respectively.

With plant sales showing signs of substantial increase, it’s more important than ever to manage your plant effectively, whether purchased or hired. If badly organised, internal and external plant and machinery used for construction projects could cost a lot more than the rental price: hired equipment can be left onsite for longer than strictly necessary or even not returned on time. Expensive fees would result, which are completely avoidable with effective plant management.

Construct for Sage from Eque2 is a contract management solution that controls your budget, customises information, manages subcontractors and provides accurate client billing. This construction job costing software also allows users to generate plant purchase orders, record on- and off-hire dates, and automatically calculate plant costs. In comparison to managing plant with spreadsheets, using Construct for Sage will enable you to save money and avoid vendor charges that can impact a project’s profitability.

If you prefer to hire plant, this software will help you manage the plant more efficiently and prevent you from succumbing to the hidden costs associated with plant hire. Your operational cashflow will be improved as tracking plant more accurately will allow you to monitor committed plant costs. Historical data will assist you in deciding whether to buy or hire machinery in the future for maximum cost-effectiveness.
